While techniques and fashion continue to evolve, true pioneers are those who leave a lasting impact through their innovation, dedication, and willingness to challenge convention. Their contributions shape not only the industry but also the generations of professionals who follow in their footsteps.
Among these trailblazers is Harrish Bhatia, one of India’s most celebrated hair stylists whose remarkable journey reflects resilience, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Born on 15 May 1954, he rose to prominence in the mid-1980s after gaining recognition as the “Master of Blindfold Hair Cutting,” a title that showcased his extraordinary skill and confidence in his craft. Over the years, his work has been featured extensively across leading newspapers, magazines, television channels, and digital platforms, earning admiration both in India and internationally.
Widely regarded as one of the most creative and influential trendsetters in the history of the Indian hair styling industry, Harrish has built a reputation that extends far beyond technical excellence. His natural flair, magnetic personality, and exceptional talent have helped redefine professional hairdressing while inspiring countless aspiring stylists. Through decades of dedication, continuous learning, and an uncompromising pursuit of perfection, he has established himself as an iconic figure whose legacy continues to shape the future of the profession.
A Journey Shaped by Resilience and Determination
Harrish’s journey is a remarkable example of how determination can overcome even the toughest circumstances. Long before he became a celebrated name in the hair and beauty industry, life demanded responsibilities from him at an age when most children were focused on school.
At just nine years old, financial hardship and family circumstances led him to join his ancestral profession of hair styling. While balancing work and education proved difficult, those early experiences instilled resilience, discipline, and an unwavering desire to create a better future.
In 1969, he moved to Mumbai with little more than hope and ambition. Working nearly 15 hours a day in a local salon for a monthly salary of ₹200, he slowly built his skills while earning the trust of clients. Despite the many challenges that came with starting from scratch, the encouragement of friends, loyal customers, and his own determination inspired him to take the next step. In 1985, he opened a small salon in Borivali with the help of a loan. What began as a modest venture laid the foundation for a career that would earn national and international recognition.
Learning Beyond Borders
Believing that growth comes through continuous learning, Harrish pursued advanced education from some of the world’s most respected hair academies. His professional qualifications include a Diploma from Tokyo Academy (1986), L’Oréal Coiffure Tendances & Creations (2000), Hair Asia Pacific, Chennai (2000), and the VIP Diploma World Championship in Hair Styling held across Berlin, Germany, and Paris.
He further enhanced his expertise through the L’Oréal International Cutting Seminar with Zoe Irwin (2001), Global Education Diploma from Vidal Sassoon in London (2003), Tony & Guy Academy, London (2003), Saks London, and professional training as a makeup artist for the film industry.
His pursuit of excellence also includes certifications from the Institute of Hairdressers & Beautician in association with the Organization Mondiale Coiffure (Sri Lanka and India), along with a diploma in faultless flying cutting with multiple scissors from Tainan, Taiwan.
Mastering the Art of Hair Styling
Innovation has always been at the heart of Harrish’s craft. Throughout his career, he has mastered a range of specialised hair-cutting techniques that set him apart in the industry.
His expertise includes glass hair cutting, candle hair cutting, single-blade cutting, eight-scissor cutting, finger-and-scissor cutting without the use of a comb, self blindfold hair cutting, and equally skilled cutting with both hands. These techniques reflect years of practice, creativity, and a commitment to constantly pushing the boundaries of his profession.
Contributing to the Growth of the Industry
Alongside his professional achievements, Harrish has remained actively involved in the development of the hair and beauty community. He has served as a committee member of ABTC, the Indian Association of Aestheticians (IAA), and AICBA Lucknow.
He has also contributed as an adviser to the Hair & Beauty Organization (HBO), Rajasthan, and has held the position of President of AIHBA Maharashtra, supporting the advancement of industry standards and professional development.
Creating Opportunities Through Service
Giving back has always been an important part of Harrish’s journey. One of his most meaningful contributions has been training visually impaired and physically challenged individuals in hair cutting, head massage, and body massage, enabling them to earn a living with dignity and independence.
His commitment to social welfare extends beyond skill development. He has supported the construction of the Jalaram Temple in his native village of Bhadarlav, Rajasthan, and contributed towards installing a drinking water facility at the village high school.
Following the 2005 tsunami, he organised a charity event titled Tsunami Show to raise support for orphaned and needy families. He also donated ₹51,000 to then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s relief efforts for underprivileged communities.
Recognition That Reflects Excellence
Years of dedication and innovation have earned Harrish numerous prestigious honours, reflecting his lasting contribution to the hair and beauty industry. Among them are the Lifetime Achievement Awards presented by HBO Carnival in Jaipur (2013) and AIHBA Maharashtra in Mumbai (2014). He has also received titles such as Sain Ratan, Kala Samrat, and Kala Bhushan, reflecting the respect he enjoys within professional and community circles.
One of the most remarkable milestones in his career came in 2005 when Ripley’s Believe It or Not recognised him in the United States for his extraordinary blindfold hair-cutting skills. His work has also been acknowledged by the Government of Rajasthan, while leading industry publications, newspapers, and magazines across India and internationally have featured his interviews, articles, and professional insights.
Beyond awards, his career has been marked by memorable moments of appreciation. Following a seminar in Jodhpur in 2002, members of the community donated silver coins equivalent to his body weight, with the collection distributed among the poor and needy as a gesture of respect. Throughout his career, he has also had the privilege of styling renowned personalities, including the late Dhirubhai Ambani, Kamal Haasan, Mukesh Khanna, and several other distinguished figures, further reflecting the trust placed in his craftsmanship and expertise.
Beyond the Salon
Beyond his accomplishments in hair styling, Harrish has cultivated a deep interest in several disciplines that contribute to personal growth and holistic well-being. He believes that personal growth comes from exploring different disciplines that nurture both the mind and body.
Over the years, he has developed a deep interest in Sujok Therapy, Art of Living, Siddha Samadhi Yoga (SSY), naturopathy, pranayama, yoga, numerology, hairology, karate, and Vastu Shastra. These pursuits have helped shape his holistic approach to both life and his profession.

That become an example for others to follow.

With exceptional talent and limitless skill, he broke numerous records and achieved such heights in the beauty industry that even the vastness of the sky seemed small in comparison.
Yes, we are talking about the shining star of the beauty industry, Mr. Harrish Bhatia.
Born on 15 March 1954 in a small village in Rajasthan, Harrish Bhatia not only devoted his life to transforming the beauty industry, but also inspired his daughter, son, daughter-in-law, nephews, granddaughters and grandsons to contribute their own remarkable talents to the world of beauty. Harrish Bhatia’s life began from a place of extreme hardship, where he had very few resources and enormous mountains of challenges stood in his way. His journey is one of years of struggle and an indomitable spirit that continues to inspire ordinary people.
In 1968, he came to Mumbai for the first time, but had to return to his village to continue his education. He was able to study only up to the ninth standard. During this period, he spent many days bedridden after suffering from typhoid.
In 1970, he returned to Mumbai and worked alongside his elder brother, Mr. Ratan Lal, in Vasai for eight years. After that, his aspirations led him to choose a different path.
The outcome of the game was yet to unfold,
The crown of which champion would rise was yet unknown.
It was too soon to decide which bird would touch the sky,
For the eagle’s true flight was yet to be seen.
In 1977, he began his struggle anew in Borivali. He worked at a salon for three years before circumstances forced him to leave the job. There was even a period in his life when he had to manage for twenty-five days with just ₹25.
Eventually, in 1980, he rented a salon on Simpoli Road, Borivali, and ran it for five years. In 1985, he purchased a small shop and established his own salon, Big Boss. The salon was inaugurated by his parents.
His family also grew during this period. He was blessed with a daughter, Jasmine, in 1980, followed by a son, Milan, in 1982.
Through his extraordinary dedication, hard work and unique talent, Harrish Bhatia achieved the World-level title of Blindfold Haircut Master in 1986.
Alongside training members of his own family, he continued to train young people from society and encouraged them to build careers in the beauty industry. His hard work gradually began to bear fruit. As he was able to purchase the neighbouring shops, the size of his establishment continued to expand, and he was eventually able to secure a comfortable home for his family.
In addition to training thousands of young people at his academy, he continued his mission of education and professional training across India and abroad through thousands of seminars and programmes.
Harrish Bhatia never hesitated to devote the money earned through seminars and events to helping disadvantaged and suffering members of society, including people with disabilities and those who were deaf, mute or otherwise physically challenged.
He also constructed a magnificent temple in his native village, where, alongside the idols of various deities, he installed statues of his parents as a tribute to them.
He was among those who came forward to provide substantial financial assistance to the victims of the tsunami, including a donation of lakhs of rupees to the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh. He also contributed generously to schools for the visually impaired.
He trained numerous blind children and encouraged them to live with dignity and confidence within society.
Today, lakhs of students trained by Harrish Bhatia are making their own mark across India and abroad. Many of these students have gone on to train countless other young people, creating new opportunities for growth and prosperity.

All of them are working with complete dedication to take the Big Boss institution forward. At the same time, following in their father’s footsteps, they continue to contribute to professional training and the beauty industry.
Harrish Bhatia expresses his gratitude to his nephew Shyam Bhatia, who has established a distinct identity as a Bollywood makeup artist and beauty professional. Shyam worked alongside him and supported the Big Boss Salon for thirteen years, standing shoulder to shoulder with him throughout that journey.

He takes great pride in his granddaughter Nikisha and grandson Vivek Bhatia, who have established their own identities in the world of beauty.
He is also grateful to his nephew Prashant Goyal, as well as his nephews Prahlad Bhatia and Shivoo Bhatia, who have contributed to the Big Boss institution through their services and support.
At 73 years of age, Harrish Bhatia, popularly known as an International Hair Designer and Blindfold Haircut Master, remains a humble and soft-spoken shining star of the beauty industry, whose achievements are truly extraordinary.
Even today, he remains deeply committed to social service.
In 2026, he handed over a large parcel of his ancestral land in his native village Bhadarlau to the government for the development of a hospital in the name of his parents. The initiative is intended to provide better healthcare facilities to people living in the surrounding villages.
An unknown shadow adorned the face of the earth,
He arrived in the city of dreams carrying a few dreams of his own.
When the wings of courage finally took flight,
The sky itself placed him upon its eyelids.
