Binance has strengthened its relationship with Circle, the company behind the USDC stablecoin, after purchasing a $100 million stake in the digital currency issuer. The investment adds another layer to the commercial relationship between the major cryptocurrency exchange and Circle as demand for dollar-linked digital assets continues to grow.
Circle disclosed the investment in a regulatory filing, stating that it issued approximately 1.24 million shares to Binance on September 17. The shares were sold at $80.84 each, bringing the total value of the transaction to roughly $100 million.
USDC is one of the largest dollar-pegged stablecoins in the cryptocurrency market. Its market capitalization is close to $75 billion, according to CoinMarketCap data. Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a relatively steady value by linking their price to traditional currencies or other assets. Their use has expanded beyond cryptocurrency trading, with businesses and financial platforms increasingly exploring them for payments and money transfers.
Alongside the investment, Circle and Binance have expanded their commercial agreement for an initial five-year period. The arrangement includes provisions allowing either company to end the agreement early under certain conditions.
Circle said the agreement includes a monthly incentive payment to Binance. The cryptocurrency exchange has also committed to undertaking activities aimed at increasing the use and visibility of USDC across its platform.
The investment comes as Circle continues to attract attention in the digital-asset market. Its shares have gained about 19% since the beginning of the year, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $24 billion.
The deal further connects two major players in the stablecoin ecosystem and gives Binance a direct financial interest in Circle as USDC expands its role across digital payments and cryptocurrency markets.
